What is your name and DJ name?
My name is Carlos Rodriguez and my DJ name is Carlos Rodriguez.
What is the name of your show? When is it?
The Lair of Sound and Fury, Thursdays from 10am to noon.
Please describe your show. What is its format?
Therapy?
There is no format. I play whatever I want. If a song touches me, then I like to share it with people and play it on the radio.
I’ve been a music collector since I was a young, young kid, and so I have lots of different styles, genres, and formats in which to play music – and it is a pure joy to touch all of my stuff and put it on the air. It’s really, really exciting for me.
As far as the guests and performances go on the air, it’s great to watch people come in and do their creative thing and to see magic. Sometimes it blows my mind: not just that I’m the DJ getting to do it on the air, but I get to have some really personal, intimate musical moments with these people because it’s an audience of thousands, but I’m the only one that’s in the studio, usually. It’s just magical to see people perform and find their radio voice.
What drew you to participate in KMRD?
I listened to Radio Dude’s show every Saturday, and then one day he had a call for DJs. I had always wanted to do this, and so it was perfect.
What is the appeal of doing a radio show? How does it fit into the rest of your life?
I’m a music nerd, and so I get to share my joy of music with other people – particularly the other DJs. It’s really wonderful to share this love that we all have for music, to play it for everyone.
What difference has being a DJ made in your life?
It’s very humbling. One day I was playing songs on the radio, crying, and someone showed up at the station with tears in their eyes and gave me a big hug. I just thought, how many tears has that studio board seen over these years? It’s wonderful to share the human experience on a broader level.
I really love our community here and being part of this station has really enriched my life, on many levels. It’s wonderful to be part of this organization and see it grow, and the community around it is just amazing as well.
What are your hopes for your show?
To keep making people cry! No…
I’m so connected to the local music scene – I love being able to expose local artists and artists who might not otherwise get radio airplay, turn people onto stuff that they might not know about.
What are your hopes for the station?
For us to have monthly concerts – living room style concerts – that would be great. And even to have a recording studio here set up. And for us to be dominant worldwide!
And for the music library?
I would love for all of the DJs to really enjoy what we have here, because it is a really great collection. It has come from many different sources, and I think we’re doing those people really proud by playing a lot of this music on the air that they have donated to the station.
