What is your name and DJ name?
My name is Alex, and my DJ name is The Alley Cat.
What is the name of your show? When is it?
The name of my show is The Alley Cat and it’s on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Please describe your show. What is its format?
It’s mostly just anything to get you grooving and feeling good. It’s a mix – mostly funk, but can go from rock and roll into mushroom jazz!
What drew you to participate in KMRD?
When I first visited Madrid, not knowing I was goign to be living here eventually, I found out about the station and just fell in love with it, and even bought koozies. And then I listened to it when I went home to Buffalo, and just kind of kept my connection here. When I moved here, it was the first thing I wanted to do.
I feel I’ve always had an ear for music and not ever had the opportunity to play an instrument, so to be able to share and be a part and to be heard, in a way – I just love how different everyone’s show is, and to contribute to that variety and eclectic-ness.
What is the appeal of doing a radio show? How does it fit into the rest of your life?
I realized that it’s kind of the evolution of my own growth. Each week, when I put my show together the day of, it’s a reflection of where I am in life. If I’m feeling down, it really pumps me back up and makes me feel confident and secure and alive. And to explore new music – the evolution of my music taste and what I listen to. I feel like I’m always collecting music, all week long, for what’s to come. Constantly saving music so that I can play it.
What difference has being a DJ made in your life?
It has helped my confidence, and speaking, and also being a part of something so large… the fact that we can stream it anywhere in the world is really important.
It’s so fun, with the fundraisers and getting to know everyone through their shows, and just being a part of it all.
Leaving my show I feel inspired, in every way.
What are your hopes for your show?
I hope that I continue to evolve, and maybe even pick up an instrument, because I’m feeling inspired.
What are your hopes for the station?
That we continue to meet all of our goals, and to grow.
